Book Review: Ella's Choice by Dr. Gaiathry Jeyarajan

As a social worker and psychotherapist who has spent over 12 years working in trauma, child protection, sexual violence, and human trafficking, one of the most common things I hear from parents is this:

"I don’t know how to start conversations with my child about consent, body safety, and boundaries."

The truth is — it is never too late to start these conversations.

In fact, conversations about consent should never be a one-time discussion. They should happen repeatedly throughout childhood and evolve alongside your child’s age, maturity, and developmental stage. These conversations are important for all children, regardless of gender.

One of my favourite resources for helping parents begin these discussions with younger children (approximately ages 4–7) is Ella's Choice!

What I appreciate most about this book is how approachable and child-friendly it is. The story uses relatable characters and age-appropriate storytelling that allows children to see themselves in the situations being discussed. Rather than creating fear or shame, the book gently introduces concepts such as personal boundaries, body autonomy, safe touch, and speaking up when something feels uncomfortable.

Another standout feature is the reader’s guide included at the end of the book. Dr. Jeyarajan clearly understands the complexity and sensitivity surrounding these conversations and provides parents and caregivers with helpful guidance on how to continue the discussion after reading. This makes the book not only a story for children, but also a practical tool for families.

I have recommended Ella's Choice to countless parents over the past few years, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Many parents have shared that the book helped them feel more confident and equipped to begin conversations they previously found intimidating.

If you are looking for a gentle, developmentally appropriate way to introduce conversations about consent, safety, and boundaries with your child, this is a resource I highly recommend.

You can find Ella's Choice on Amazon Canada.
